The World in Actions: Ritual Knowledge and Spatial Conceptions Among the Náayeri from Western Mexico

Margarita Valdovinos

This paper analyzes the knowledge employed by the different participants of Náayeri mitote rituals as they use certain toponymic terms belonging to specialized ceremonial knowledge. My study concerns the transmission process related to this kind of expertise and aims to show ritual as an interactive context that offers a particular way of knowing: ritual experience is orientated more towards the transmission of its conditions of possibility than to the transmission of knowledge itself. In other words, ritual knowledge among the Náayeri is less about the transmission of meaning of particular representations than about the knowledge that allows people to use them.
