An Organology of the Americas as Painted by John White and Other Artists

Mark Howell

The English artist John White is credited with painting some of the most precise representations of Amerindians living in the Virginia-Carolina region during the first colonization attempts by the English in America (1587). Included in his depictions are musical instruments that in most cases represent the only evidence we have for these soundmakers in this part of the New World. White’s paintings were made into prints by the publisher Theodor de Bry for his Grand Voyages series. The second book in the series concerned the first French attempt at colonizing Florida (1564), and prints of music instruments from this area are attributed to paintings by the French artist Jacques le Moyne. This chapter lists the organology painted and examines claims for the respective works as primary source material. Playing techniques and the contexts of instrument use are also examined.
