An eyewitness Spanish account of a festival in Cuzco led by Manco Inca, unique in its length, detail, and proximity to pre-Hispanic practice, suggests many things that students of Inca culture might expect: that the festival was organized so as to embody and enact the complexities of Cuzco’s sacro-political social order, that it was carefully located so as to mark important sacred sites or huacas, that it involved centrally the celebration of the sun, and more. At the same time, the account suggests other less predictable things, especially involving Inca conceptions of the powers of sung, danced taki. Analysis of the account defamiliarizes the workings of this taki and clarifies its connection to the Inca sacred imaginary, at the same time constellating it anew among the aims and processes of Inca expressive culture of all sorts: graphic, plastic, and linguistic.
